Should I ever poison a Boynton Beach skunk?
Boynton Beach kunks are pests that are often found going through your garbage bins. They are scavengers and are reliant on humans for food. They also steal pet food in order to survive. The most annoying thing about these critters is the noxious gas that they spray. This is an involuntary reaction that is meant to protect them from predators. It is very difficult to get rid of. They often spray people and pets and the smell lingers for days.
Different poisons that can be used.
Poison is a cruel and inhumane way to get rid of Florida skunks. It causes immense suffering and other animals are often exposed to it. There are various poisons that people use to kill skunks.
• Rat poison. This will cause the animal to bleed internally. It takes a few days for them to die and is extremely painful.
• Anti-freeze. This will cause organ failure and takes about 24 hours to work.
• Chocolate. If Boynton Beach skunks ingest large amounts of chocolate, it will kill them. In small doses it will make them very ill.
• Mothballs. The smell of them should be enough to keep the skunks away. If ingested it will kill them.
Legal implications
In most states, it is illegal to kill any wild animals. This includes Florida skunks, even though they are considered a pest animal. If you get caught poisoning them, you will be liable for a large fine.
Alternate options
• Live trapping. Catching the Boynton Beach skunks in a cage and relocating them is the most humane way to get rid of them. Be careful to make sure that you relocate them to areas that they will not be endangering the other wildlife that lives there. Also, be careful not to leave them in an area where they will be killed by predators.
• Shoot them. Many people believe this to be the most humane way to kill them. Make sure that you are legally permitted to do this.
• Phone a professional. There are people who are better equipped than you to get rid of skunks. If you are not having any luck, it might be a good idea to phone a professional.
Why shouldn’t I poison them?
If you poison the Florida skunk, it takes a few days for it to die. This means that it will be in extreme pain. The other problem will be the carcass. If it is on your property, you will need to dispose of it. If not, other scavengers will eat it, and the poison will kill them. Pets are also known to eat poison that is left out for pests.
